On the day I set out for a conference in Abuja, it didn’t occur to me that I’ll find love. I held my novel hoping to read till my eyes were weary, till sleep clamped my will to keep awake. And so when I met Toyin, a petit, beautiful lady, I didn’t deliberately drink in her personality and person. Her voice freezed my reading and I stared at a paragraph, not reading, in the vehicle.
I was sitting in front, next to my boss, who was driving, and she, behind me. She knew my boss and so they talked, catching up on old times and discussing random subjects. I could have turned back to see her pretty face which I hadn’t intentionally looked at before we left Ibadan for Abuja, it was late. Call it pride.
Truth is, Toyin had this melodious laughter that rang out, high-pitched. It was that sort of laughter that made you wonder if she had problems at all in a world clothed with troubles. She spoke intelligently and she skillfully wield her feminity into the conversation. At Abuja, in between the conference, I wrote. piece and she featured in the piece. We would later talk about it and I am glad you couldn’t feel my heart throbbing with joy as I spoke with her. She was shy, so couldn’t steady her gaze on me. I steadied my gaze. I wasn’t going to repeat the mistake of Ibadan in Abuja. You can, you have the freedom of expression.
It’s been 3 months and I’m grateful my path crossed with Toyin’s. Toyin is an embodiment of brilliance, compassion, beauty, and tenderness. She is one person that has drawn out my humour in a gorgeous way. For every time I think about how it all started, I’m awed at how one can find love in strange places. So, the next time I’m traveling, I’ll go with the mind to find love and maybe without a novel. I hope you consciously truly be with people you meet in life even for the shortest time. You may find love like me. Sorry, it wasn’t love, it was friendship, but that sort that makes you think of some angels possessing human forms.
