How about the hurricane of evil whirling in our chest, creating in our minds the untamed hunger for godlessness? We suppress the very truth we know, the glint that should set us free.
I was in the dormitory in SS1 when a senior boy dared a senior girl to enter our hostel. In their youthful burning lust laced with lewd jokes, I was awed by her temerity. I busied myself, waiting for crazy scenes to unfold.
She entered the first room, awash with pride. The senior boy grabbed her, his hands working as evil blood surged into them. She screamed, struggling to leave. I didn’t know if she truly wanted to leave or not. In any case, the deed had been done.
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Galatians 5:17 NIV
Don’t we sometimes embrace evil in the hope that God will forgive? Each day we struggle with wild thoughts seeking expression, the flesh, begging to be satisfied. Don’t we intentionally allow our minds to wander and wonder the forbidden things, things people will never place us side by side with? Just a taste of sin. Sadly, even when we see the looming danger, we still allow ourselves to cave in under the weight of the flaming cravings.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15 NIV
For believers, the spirit will always wrestle with the flesh. Sometimes we will feel the pressure to do what everybody is doing. Didn’t Noah feel this way, and Daniel? One thing is sure, Jesus knows all about our struggles and is ever present to hold our hands while we tread on this side of life. In our spirits is the Comforter, who comforts and helps us. You’re not alone in your struggles against sin. Brace up and rest in the sympathising hands of your Father.
